How serious can winter blues be..

I am sure very few people like winters and short dark cloudy days...but I believe that people have the mental strength to adjust to the condition and find activities even during such times. I mean people have been living up north in norway/finalnd, etc. for so many years and do not seem to be upset about it at all... So I am really quite amused by the fact that the FDA just approved an anti-depresseant for winter blues (Article).

It seems like the mind of the people here is just not in their control and that there needs to be a drug to feel a certain way at any time. I feel that the people here have just lost the ability to feel something for real...and everything is artificially induced joy, love, happiness...

I guess Law & Order can now come up with a episode where the defence for murder is winter blues :) ..

Great blog Kaveri and DP! DP had given me the link a while ago on google talk and I did not save it then. I will visit regularly now.

About this winter post, coincidentally, we discussed something similar yesterday. We were watching a documentary, "To Be and to have", http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0318202/,
and the teacher asks the kid to play in the snow. They are wrapped up in their warm clothes but they are asked to play outside even when it is snowing a little bit.

This is true especially in the countries that you mentioned. They are trained right from their childhood to treat winter just as any other season and not to let it stop them from anything. If they didn't do that, their winter depression problems would multiply like anything.

I have not seen as many children play in the snow in US as I have seen in Europe.
